Fencing Toowoomba: the Full Range of Fence Types
The fence that suits your block depends on what it has to do. Solid steel or timber for a boundary you want closed off, glass or aluminium where a pool barrier has to meet the Queensland safety standard, vinyl where you never want to paint again, spaced slats where the street frontage is the point, and strained wire where stock has to stay put. Every one of them starts the same way: someone measures the run and puts a fixed price in writing.
Choosing Between a Colorbond Fence and Timber
This is the decision most Toowoomba homeowners are stuck on, and the usual framing is wrong. Timber is not automatically the cheap option and steel is not automatically the upgrade. Colorbond carries more cost in materials and less in labour because a sheet run erects quickly; timber is the reverse and then asks for oiling or sealing every few years. Over a short run the installed figures can land surprisingly close together, and over a decade the upkeep cycle is what separates them.
Beyond those two, the choice widens. PVC removes painting entirely and accepts a narrow colour range in exchange. Aluminium slat is a semi-privacy street-frontage look rather than a way to screen a rear boundary. Full-height solid runs and freestanding screens are the answer when a neighbour's upstairs window or a busy road is the actual problem. Rural fencing is priced by the kilometre and judged on how well its ends are anchored.
Whatever the material, the same three site factors move the price on a Toowoomba block: how far the ground falls and therefore how many steps a run needs, whether a post-hole digger can get to the fence line, and whether the digging is reactive black soil out west or rocky red basalt up on the range. Footing depth and post spacing follow the block's wind exposure too, which on a range-edge site is a materially different calculation.
Boundary Fence or Dividing Fence: Who Pays for What
If the fence sits on the boundary it is a dividing fence, and Queensland's Neighbourhood Disputes (Dividing Fences and Trees) Act 2011 sets out how two owners share the cost. Adjoining owners generally contribute equally to a sufficient dividing fence, which for residential land means between 0.5 m and 1.8 m high and substantially built of the materials the Act lists. Where one owner wants more than sufficient, that owner covers the difference.
The practical advice is the same in every case: talk to next door before ordering anything, get a written quote you can hand over, and put the agreement in writing. If agreement does not come, a notice to contribute is the formal step, and unresolved matters go to QCAT within the timeframes the Act sets. Split invoicing is available so each household is billed its own share. What nobody can promise is what your neighbour will decide.
Two other rules come up constantly. A fence up to 2 m above natural ground is generally accepted development in Queensland, and above that you need approval from a building certifier, with a fence on a retaining wall assessed on combined height. And a pool barrier is a separate regime altogether under the Queensland pool safety standard, certified by a licensed pool safety inspector. Licensed operators do the regulated work on both.
